Makiyah's Story & Majesty's Newborn Highlights - City of Refuge | Atlanta Newborn Photographer

Originally from Greenwood, Mississippi, 19 year old Makiyah Taylor moved to Atlanta with her mom and four siblings for "a better life."  She said, "it’s really country there so my mom wanted me to move to start fresh in the city."  However, after some instability living with family, in an extended stay hotel, and then another homeless shelter, Makiyah and her mom were referred to City of Refuge.  And after becoming pregnant, Makiyah moved into the Kindred Spirit Teen Pregnancy Home which exists to assist homeless unwed pregnant teens or pregnant teens that have limited family support in a loving, safe, Christian oriented home.

Despite her circumstances, this girl was full of smiles throughout her session and when asked her about her experience as a mom so far...

she said, "It’s like a new calling...it’s not hard for me because I’m used to taking care of my niece, but I’m still learning as I go every day."  Makiyah decided to name her little man "Majesty" and shared that "being his mom, nursing, and bonding with him makes me happy because I've been hurt a lot...it fills those empty spaces and makes me feel whole."  She went on to say, "I have matured a lot and I’ve grown up.  The circumstances I’ve been in made me stronger and I appreciate life.  I'm not taking anything for granted."

When I asked her about her favorite things about her son, her face lit up.  She said, "I love everything about him.  He’s perfect."

Welcome to the world, Majesty!

Makiyah has her GED and wants to be a pediatrician or go to school for fashion design.   Her advice for other moms in her situation is to "[not] get discouraged, stay positive, pray, and keep your faith...it’s eventually going to change for the better."
