Annnnd another beautiful baby born to a mom at City of Refuge! Of the eight or so women living in the Kindred Spirit Home, 4 of them have had babies in the last month and a half...so it's been an exciting season for me getting to do so much newborn photography. Aubrey Nicole was a beautiful baby and one thing's for sure...she gets it from her momma! Aubrey's mom, Germanie ("Gigi"), was one of the happiest, spunkiest moms I've ever seen just days after the birth of a child (I had more of a glazed over "what happened? where am I?" look). She was ready to go with hair, makeup, and all smiles...it warmed my heart. I sat down with her after our session to hear more of her story...and she kindly allowed me to share it with you all.
A native Haitian, Gigi came to America at the age of five. Expecting a baby as a teen and in need of support, she landed at Atlanta's City of Refuge Kindred Spirit Teen Pregnancy Home. Kindred Spirit exists "to assist homeless unwed pregnant teens or unwed pregnant teens that have limited family support [in a] loving, safe, Christian oriented home". It is a place where these girls can live in community throughout their pregnancies and as new moms - encouraging and uplifting one another through an incredible, but sometimes overwhelming journey. Gigi told me: "City of Refuge and Kindred Spirit is a blessing…they do a lot for me and my child. Honestly, we would be nothing without Kindred Spirit.”
This momma has high hopes for her new bundle of joy: “Aubrey is my life…my gift from God. I did not expect her to be so beautiful and our bond is amazing...I was in shock by how good spirited she is.” ...and such a wise perspective on her role as a mother: “I know now that everything I do in life now is for my child. God gave me a child for a great reason and I want to the be the mother God wants me to be.”
When asked about the future and her hopes for Aubrey, Gigi told me, "I want to finish school, get my CNA, be able to provide for my child on my own, and see her grow into a beautiful baby. I want her to accomplish a lot – more than I have when I was younger."
As always, it's so cool to get a glimpse into these mother's lives at COR and to see God so clearly between those four walls. I wish these two all the best...and my prayers are going out every day. Enjoy highlights from this spunky momma and her beautiful baby...
